In Zimbabwe, community connections are critical. A traditional institutional "western style" orphanage would leave children unprepared to function in the community. The Hands of Hope home model emphasizes local community involvement and community ties for the children. All attempts our made to place the children with extended family within one year. In addition, we also pay for the education of children, in local schools, to help them develop life skills and the ability to survive and help build the community around them.

Our homes are not castles, but geared directly toward the lifestyle of the community around them. The home is a large house fitted to accommodate 10 to 15 children with enough staff to keep the ratio at 1 adult for every 4 to five children. This helps ensure adequate care, guidance and love throughout the child's formative years. Homes are located in residential areas and usually run in association with a local church that will send volunteers and include the children in activities that help children bond with friends and other families.
